Man United Legendary lure sees Antonio Conte vow to revive giant

Antonio Conte, the 57‑year‑old Italian coach, told The Athletic on 5 October 2026 that he wants to resurrect a falling giant, naming a club whose history has been neglected. The former Napoli manager, who left after a two‑year spell that yielded Serie A and the Italian Super Cup, hinted at Man United Legendary.

Premier League pedigree

Conte’s résumé includes Premier League experience at Chelsea and Tottenham. At Chelsea he guided the club to a top‑four finish, while his Tottenham spell ended in March 2023 amid a chaotic campaign. The Italian’s time in England gave him insight into the league’s pressures.

He said: “If you go to a club where the history speaks for itself – a history made up of trophies, league titles and victories – you can only honour that history by bringing the ambition to win back those goals.” Conte added that only one team can dominate every year, but he wants to ignite the spark that makes fans believe they can win.

Manchester United's recent struggles

Manchester United have not lifted the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2012‑13. In the ensuing thirteen years the Red Devils have collected only two FA Cups (2016, 2024), two EFL Cups (2017, 2023) and a Europa League (2017). Their start to the current campaign has yielded just five points from five matches.

Michael Carrick, appointed as United’s manager, has faced intense scrutiny after the poor start. The club’s early form contrasts sharply with the third‑place finish Carrick achieved at the end of last season.

Conte indicated he would consider a mid‑season appointment if the project is worthwhile, despite traditionally joining clubs in the summer. He warned that English clubs are “using bazookas while elsewhere they still use a pistol” and stressed the need for prudent money‑spending and a clear vision.

His hint has already revived speculation about a possible return to Old Trafford, with several clubs likely to assess their options now that the veteran manager is available.
