Man United and Man City clash sparks Michael Carrick's referee outburst
Man United manager Michael Carrick saw a historic chance evaporate when Phil Foden was sent off in the first half of Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, leaving his side a man down against Man City and ultimately succumbing to a 1‑0 defeat.
Carrick's furious response
Carrick could have secured the rare feat of winning his first two Manchester derbies, but his side slumped to a 1‑0 loss after the early dismissal. What will Carrick say about his team's failure to find a goal on a huge day in Manchester?
Enzo Maresca weighed in on the red‑card incident, describing the decision as contentious. His comments added to the growing debate over the referee's handling of the situation.
"Not even confused. We put things in place in the game now to help referees, how many screens, how many people. It's more worrying if that's the interpretation of the game of football. If that's the definition of not interfering with play with our defender next to him within an inch of the ball, it's a staggering decision. I couldn't understand it once I've seen it and the explanation makes it even worse. Incredible," Carrick said.
"There's a long season ahead. We've got to get back to winning football matches but that decision is not on us today," he added.
"It's up to us to create and score after that, of course it is. We had moments. It's not easy but you've seen it before — big moments in big games like that have a huge impact and obviously it did today," Carrick continued.
"We could've created more. We're a good team so we'll get back to winning ways," he concluded.
