Man City miss deadline, Chelsea raise Enzo Fernandez price above £120m

In August, Chelsea’s £120 million asking price for Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez has lapsed after Manchester City missed the Friday deadline, and manager Xabi Alonso refused to guarantee the player will stay beyond the summer window. He praised Fernandez’s attitude in training and said the club remains focused on the upcoming Premier League start.

Alonso highlighted the Argentine’s attitude since rejoining training ten days ago, calling him a top player who has integrated quickly. He added that the midfielder’s focus and integration are key ahead of the season.

Manchester City remain interested in Fernandez, yet Enzo Maresca’s side has not submitted a formal bid. The interest underscores City’s continued search for midfield reinforcement.

Higher price target after deadline

Chelsea sources indicated the Blues would now pursue a fee above the original £120 million should City initiate negotiations. The club’s stance reflects a willingness to capitalize on the player’s market value.

When asked whether Fernandez would stay after the deadline, Alonso said the midfielder is a Chelsea player, training well and preparing for Monday’s preparations. Alonso avoided confirming any personal desire from Fernandez to remain.

He emphasized that preparation for the Premier League kickoff is the collective priority, with everyone doing their best to get ready. He noted that the squad is focused on the Premier League start.

With the September 1 deadline looming, the club has linked Alex Scott, Adam Wharton and Martin Zubimendi as possible replacements if Fernandez departs. These names have been linked by various reports as viable options.

In parallel, Joao Pedro is set to sign a new deal and has been handed the No 9 shirt previously worn by Liam Delap, prompting Alonso to commend his personality and leadership growth. Alonso believes Pedro’s focus and desire to score will benefit the team.

KIERAN GILL of MAIL noted that the market is seeing clubs push valuation thresholds as transfer windows close, underscoring the financial pressure on Premier League sides. Such dynamics illustrate the broader trend of inflated fees as clubs scramble before the window shuts.
