Man City in financial scandal – Haaland calls for unity

Erling Haaland, the Norwegian international of Manchester City, called on the club to stick together in a Sky interview ahead of the away match against Liverpool on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., while the club is under significant pressure due to a financial scandal. The player emphasized that one must “stick together and enjoy the journey.” His words come as Manchester City fights against possible harsh sanctions.

Financial scandal and possible sanctions

An independent Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty on all 115 charges, stating that the company had breached financial rules. Potential penalties range from the revocation of multiple league titles to a forced relegation. The allegation concerns the use of fictitious commercial contracts to inflate revenue and reduce costs by over £900 million.

The club lodged a timely appeal against the verdict and, in a statement, declared that it rejects the Premier League's accusations. The club's official statement emphasizes that Manchester City denies the allegations and hopes for a fair assessment.

Haaland's appeal before the Liverpool match

In the Sky interview, Haaland said: “We must stick together and show each other love. So yes: stick together, enjoy the journey and smile.” He added that one should stay positive and look forward in order to win games and enjoy the situation.

The striker further emphasized: “We must stick together, we must be there for each other and stay positive. No matter what happens in life, we must always have a smile on our faces.” His message was addressed to teammates, coaches and fans alike.

The investigation found that Manchester City used fictitious contracts between 2009 and 2018 to increase revenue by over £900 million (US$1.2 billion). This practice is said to have artificially inflated the club’s balance sheet.

Haaland explained that he “has a lot for City and a lot for the fans, because he himself is a fan and feels close to them.” This underscores his personal bond with the club.

Since the appeal was filed on time, it may be a long time before a final verdict on the penalty or an acquittal is rendered. The commission’s decision remains pending until then.
