Man City convicted of 114 of 115 financial breaches – sanction looming

Manchester City has been found guilty by the Premier League of 114 of the 115 accusations of financial rule breaches, according to reports from The Athletic and the BBC. The club still has to await which sanctions the independent commission will impose, ranging from fines to possible relegation.

Scope of the violations

The investigations show that the violations spanned from 2009 to 2018, a period in which the club won three league titles and two FA Cups. The Premier League had already sued the club in 2023 for more than one hundred breaches of its financial fair‑play rules.

Specific irregularities

According to the findings, Manchester City deliberately reported false sponsorship income and used fictitious deals with satellite companies owned by the owner to pump money into the club. In addition, the club allegedly did not provide accurate insight into the salaries of players and coaches.

Previous punishments and possible consequences

The club was handed a two‑year ban from European competitions by UEFA in 2020, later reduced to a fine of €10 million after an appeal to the CAS. In 2014, a fine of almost €60 million was imposed for earlier financial fair‑play violations. The current sanctions could range from heavy fines and points deductions to the loss of titles or even exclusion from the Premier League.

Manchester City emphasized in a statement that the process is still ongoing and that “key elements still need to be concluded under strict confidentiality”. The club continues to maintain that its position remains unchanged compared to earlier rulings and expects to appeal once the decision becomes final.

The accusations were first made public after an investigation by the German weekly Der Spiegel, which labeled the 2009‑2018 period as problematic. Since the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, the club has received massive investments, which is the basis for the current financial controversy.
