Man City backs out as Leeds United pursue keeper James Trafford
Leeds United have entered talks to sign 23‑year‑old England goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City, who only returned to the Etihad Stadium last summer. The deal would see the young keeper leave the club after just four Premier League appearances and could fill the vacancy left by Karl Darlow.
Karl Darlow, who finished last season as Leeds’ first‑choice goalkeeper, left Elland Road to join Manchester United on a free transfer. His departure creates a vacancy in goal for the club.
Illan Meslier, who has signed for Arsenal, has also moved on, leaving manager Daniel Farke looking to buy a replacement. The loss adds pressure on the Leeds side to secure a new keeper.
Lucas Perri was bought by Leeds last summer, but he lost his place during the season. The club therefore needs to reinforce the goalkeeper position.
James Trafford has been a long‑term target for Newcastle, who made a bid for him last summer, and he also attracted interest from Aston Villa. Leeds United are now the favourites to sign the 23‑year‑old England goalkeeper.
Trafford, a product of Manchester City’s academy, was bought back last summer after City activated their matching‑rights clause when Newcastle made an offer for him. The clause allowed City to retain control over his future.
Trafford was surprised when City then signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italy international who became the regular in the Premier League and the Champions League. Donnarumma’s arrival limited Trafford’s opportunities.
Trafford only made four Premier League appearances for City, but he started the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals, earning two medals from his second spell at the club. Those limited chances underline his desire for regular football.
