Mallorca's Ivan Cuellar rushed to hospital after training collapse
RCD Mallorca confirmed on Monday that 42‑year‑old goalkeeper Ivan “Pichu” Cuellar was rushed to hospital after a large structure in the club’s training‑ground canteen collapsed, leaving him with a serious head injury. The incident occurred at the Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio, also known as Son Bibiloni, ahead of a scheduled training session.
Incident and Club Statement
The Spanish club released a statement on Monday describing how the decor in the dining room gave way, crushing the player. “This morning, Ivan ’Pichu’ Cuéllar suffered a serious head injury after a large structure, which formed part of the decor in the dining room at the Ciutat Esportiva collapsed,” the club wrote, adding that he would remain under observation for the next 24 hours.
Images of the collapsed structure were later shared, and the club’s statement began with the Dutch word “Een”, underscoring the unusual nature of the accident.
Goalkeeping Crisis Ahead of Girona Clash
Cuellar has been with Mallorca for the last three years, serving as a backup goalkeeper and making only three appearances for the club to date. Prior to joining Mallorca, he turned out 247 times for Sporting Gijón over nine years and also featured for Leganés, Eibar and Atlético Madrid, where he played eleven matches.
The veteran re‑joined Sporting Gijón in 2021 after a four‑year spell at Eibar before signing for Mallorca in 2023. His limited game time this season saw him on the bench for every league match, his last appearance coming in December 2025.
With Cuellar sidelined, Mallorca are left with only one senior shot‑stopper, Arnau Tenas, who is expected to start the upcoming Segunda División clash against Girona on Sunday 4 October. Reserve goalkeeper Toni Dols has featured on the bench this season, while Finnish international Lucas Bergström is unavailable on international duty.
Both Mallorca and Girona were relegated from La Liga this season, with Mallorca trailing Girona only on goal difference in the league table. The club’s squad also includes former Liverpool left‑back Alberto Moreno, who plays alongside the injured keeper.
