Maldini loses licence in Milan crash, positive for alcohol in Serie A

Cagliari striker Daniel Maldini, 24, was hospitalized in Milan after crashing his Porsche Carrera 4 into another vehicle in the early hours of Sunday; local police recorded two breath‑alcohol tests at 0.91 and 0.89 grams per litre, exceeding the legal limit of 0.5.

According to Europa Press, authorities immediately revoked his driving licence and, after being examined at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, the player was discharged shortly thereafter and returned home.

Details of the accident and evidence

The crash occurred at around 5:15 a.m. on Caracciolo Road, north of Milan. Maldini was driving the Porsche when he collided with a Volkswagen Golf; the impact also damaged a parked car and left the six people involved without serious injuries.

The breath‑alcohol tests yielded readings of 0.91 and 0.89 grams per litre, both above the maximum allowed of 0.5 in Italy, which led to the revocation of his licence and a charge for driving under the influence of alcohol, with possible administrative and criminal penalties.

Sporting and family repercussions

Lawyer Danilo Buongiorno confirmed that Maldini was in good health and had been discharged immediately after the incident.

Hours before the accident, the striker had been the protagonist of Cagliari's victory over Atalanta in Bergamo, scoring the penalty that decided the match 2‑1 and netting his second consecutive goal in Serie A.

Daniel is the son of the legendary Paolo Maldini and the grandson of Cesare Maldini; he began his career in Milan's youth ranks, debuted with the first team and played for clubs such as Spezia, Empoli, Monza and Atalanta before joining Cagliari.

Authorities requested toxicology tests to detect possible illicit substances; the results have not yet been released. Il Della Sera also reported a positive pre‑test for illicit substances. So far, Cagliari has not issued an official statement and coach Fabio Pisacane remains confident in the player while the facts are clarified.
