Maldini close to Italy technical director job as vacancy persists

🇮🇹

Paolo Maldini is now nearer to accepting the technical director position of the Italy men's national team, a development revealed by Gialuca Di Marzio of Sky Sport Italia, following a week of speculation that saw Claudio Ranieri and Gianluigi Buffon linked to the role.

FIGC president Giovanni Malagò, newly elected, is reported to want to move quickly by appointing a technical director first. The appointed director would then have the freedom to select a head coach of his choosing.

The Azzurri are currently overseen by caretaker Silvio Baldini. Their next competitive appearance is scheduled for late September, when they open the UEFA Nations League 2026/27 campaign against Belgium.

Maldini’s supporters argue that installing a technical director before a head coach is the proper method for any football organisation. They add that while free‑flowing football is desirable, it should not dictate the hierarchy of an institution.

Maldini’s record at Milan, where the club has progressed since his departure three seasons ago, is cited as evidence of his capability. His characteristic calmness is seen as an asset that could translate to the national team environment.

With the next major test – qualification for the 2030 World Cup – at least four years away, the FIGC aims to plan ahead. Allowing Maldini’s influence to permeate the hierarchy is intended to help Italy mount a comeback on the international stage.

Should he take the post, Maldini could help Italy mount a comeback on the national stage, according to the analysis accompanying the announcement.
