Lyon must unleash full arsenal against Fenerbahce's monstrous side

Under the floodlights of Istanbul’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Fenerbahce-OL Lyon brace for a Ligue des champions first‑leg showdown on Tuesday, with the Turkish giants hailed as a “monstrous” and “very dangerous” side. Both coaches warned that defensive discipline will be crucial, while Lyon’s recent triumph over Sparta Prague adds pressure to deliver.

Lyon’s path to the Champions League

Lyon are only two matches away from securing a place in the Champions League after eliminating Sparta Prague in the previous round. The French side lost the first leg 1‑2 but responded with a 3‑0 victory in the return, overturning the deficit. Those results leave them facing a single opponent to preserve their European campaign.

Fenerbahce’s reinforced roster

Fenerbahce have bolstered their squad this summer, adding Nathan Aké, Mason Greenwood and Romelu Lukaku, creating an XXL roster that the Portuguese coach does not underestimate. The club’s aggressive recruitment underscores its ambition to dominate the tie. Paulo Fonseca described the Turkish side as “a really strong team with very strong individualities” and stressed the need for Lyon to defend well.

“I think Fenerbahce is a team really strong, with very strong individualities. The quality of the players is incredible at the moment. Offensively, they are a very dangerous team,” Fonseca said in a press conference on Monday. “We must defend well to have the chance of a good result. They are strong in all moments, both offensively and defensively.”

Defender Moussa Niakhaté echoed the warning, noting that “they have a monstrous team on all lines.” He added that Lyon will rely on their own weapons but must be “very precise and concentrated” to trouble their opponents. “The whole team will have to defend well against these excellent players and be rigorous for more than 90 minutes,” he told the media.

Lyon entered the season unbeaten in pre‑season, recording three victories and a draw, yet they are far from invincible. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, suffered a 2‑1 defeat to Genclerbirligi in their opening Turkish league match, showing that even a “monstrous” side can be vulnerable.

After the first leg in Istanbul, the Gones will host the Turkish side at Groupama Stadium on Wednesday 26 August. The two matches will decide the clubs’ European future.
