Luis Alberto leaves Lazio, dreams of LaLiga, ending up in Qatar

Luis Alberto left Lazio, a club where he was a hyper‑protagonist for eight seasons, to chase a dream in LaLiga that ended with a contract at Al Duhail in Qatar. The 34‑year‑old said he had wanted to leave the Italian capital for years, but opportunities in Serie, Premier and even in Major League Soccer did not materialise.

Ambitions in Spain and England

Over the years the midfielder expressed interest in Milan, Sevilla and Premier League clubs, but none of these proposals turned into a transfer. He had even reached a verbal agreement with a Spanish club to return to the Liga the following year.

The jump to Qatar

In 2024 Luis Alberto signed for Al Duhail, accepting a hefty contract increase. The new deal takes him out of the European scene, but guarantees him a prominent role in the Qatar Stars League.

The journey in Serie A

Wearing the sky‑blue shirt he amassed 307 appearances, 52 goals and 79 assists, demonstrating consistency and versatility. Despite the long stay, he admitted he struggled to feel part of the club’s daily life, even considering ending his career in Major League Soccer.

“I arrived on the final day of the market, almost unexpectedly,” the former Deportivo player said. “I had a good season, I was ready to stay at Liverpool for the final year of my contract, but then that opportunity popped up at the last minute.”

The midfielder then explained how, after a few days of mental work, he regained the right mindset for football, managing to enjoy himself and compete at the highest level year after year.
