Lugano faces Young Boys in a Super League test – Defense in focus

On Saturday evening at the Stadio di Cornaredo in Lugano, a Super League test takes place, where the Young Boys (YB) put their collective defending at the centre and both unbeaten teams fight for supremacy. The encounter is the marquee match of the eighth championship round and promises excitement until the final minute.

Marquee match in the eighth round

With Lugano and the Young Boys meeting on Saturday in Ticino, the Ticinese sides are the only still unbeaten Super League teams in the 8th championship round. Both teams have so far not suffered a home defeat, which makes the duel a true showdown.

Lugano's perfect run

Peter Klaunzer writes that on paper the fixture Lugano vs. YB on Saturday evening looks like a showdown. Coach Mattia Croci‑Torti leads a team that, with six wins from six Super League matches, displays a perfect run and, thanks to a backhand, holds three points reserve on yellow‑black.

Young Boys rely on collective defence

The Young Boys have so far scored 26 goals, conceded 14, and have achieved only one draw in three of seven games. One player alone cannot achieve anything, explains striker Samuel Essende, who at YB focuses on a stable defence. At YB it is about collective defending, demands coach Gerardo Seoane, 47.

“It is about the coordination of the lines,” explains Seoane. “Certainly the sense of the attacking players must become even more optimal, knowing when each space must be closed, and defending is the task of all eleven players.”

The day before the match, the SRF live broadcast of the round will already be aired on Saturday with kickoff in Lugano. In the studio with host Mevion Heim, Fabian Frei is present as an expert, and he also analyses the tactical details.

Goalkeeper Marvin Keller sums up the duel: “Good test at a good moment against an opponent in very good shape.” The motivation is palpable down to the hair tips, and the defensive work starts right at the front, to close spaces and support teammates.

Against an until now flawless Lugano, the combined forces of the Young Boys will be more necessary than ever to preserve the current record and to dominate the game not only offensively but also defensively.
