Luc Nilis says PSV pushed him out as Gerets favoured a stand‑in

Luc Nilis has looked back on his final spell at PSV and explained why he ultimately left Eindhoven. The former Rode Duivel felt increasingly undervalued under coach Eric Gerets and was offered a contract extension that he deemed unacceptable, refusing to accept a role as a backup.

Nilis enjoyed an absolute top period at the Dutch club, becoming a crowd favourite in Eindhoven and forming a feared attacking duo with Ronaldo. The Belg grew into a key figure for PSV, delivering goals and excitement season after season.

Gerets' relationship and benching

According to Nilis, the problem lay in his relationship with Gerets, who had built a massive status as a former PSV player. “I had become so big within PSV and he couldn’t deal with that,” Nilis said, adding that Gerets was “a bit ‘Mister PSV’”. He also felt deliberately provoked and was regularly left on the bench, with Arnold Bruggink taking his place.

Contract offer and stand‑in role

During the winter break of his final contract year, PSV travelled abroad for a training camp with chairman Harry van Raaij present. The club then offered Nilis a new two‑year deal, but the condition was that he would act as a stand‑in for Bruggink. “They offered me a new contract for two seasons, but I would be a stand‑in for Arnold Bruggink,” he recalled, before saying, “Then we shake hands now.”

Nilis felt still too good and ambitious to accept a supporting role. “With all respect to Arnold, but I’m not going to be the young guy’s weekly stand‑in. Where is my ambition then? I felt still fit enough,” he explained.

In hindsight, Nilis would have preferred a direct conversation. “I would have preferred that he had said: ‘Luc must leave here’, I would have appreciated that more. Not like this. He knew I would not agree,” he concluded, underscoring the broken trust that led to his departure.
