Louey Ben Farhat joins the DFB national team, seeks U21 debut
In the stadium of Karlsruhe one observes the 20‑year‑old striker talent Louey Ben Farhat, national team Louey Ben Farhat, who in the current 2. Bundesliga season has so far only recorded one assist and is now officially changing associations to play in the future for the DFB team and the German U21 national team.
Association switch and international perspective
Louey Ben Farhat, who until now appeared as a Tunisian international, played a friendly match for the Tunisian A national team in March and April respectively. After he declined the World Cup nomination of his own accord due to excessive workload, Tunisia’s national coach Sabri Lamouchi described the move as “disrespectful”. Since he only had two caps for Tunisia, the association switch is possible.
According to Transfermarkt and pay‑TV broadcaster Sky, Ben Farhat is set to be nominated for the German U21 national team for the first time during the upcoming international break. The U21 qualification includes away matches in Latvia on September 26 and in Malta on September 30, before hosting Georgia in Bielefeld on October 6. This would allow him to appear for the German side in the European Championship qualification.
Club career and market value
In the current 2. Bundesliga season the 20‑year‑old striker talent has so far scored six goals and provided two assists in twenty appearances, despite having suffered a mid‑foot fracture in the first half of last season and missing four months. When he returned after the injury, he displayed his class. His market value jumped from three to ten million euros, and according to Transfermarkt only four German forwards under 21 are rated higher.
SC Freiburg signed Ben Farhat for up to seven point five million euros from Karlsruher SC and immediately loaned him back. The young man will remain on loan at KSC until the summer, before a permanent move to Freiburg is to take place. At the end of the season his contribution for both clubs will continue to be monitored.
He is seen by many observers as an important talent for the future of German football. The switch marks the end of a short but intense period with the Tunisian national team and opens new opportunities in the German association. The decision is being closely followed by fans and experts alike.
