Lizarazu warns ageing Ronaldo will end in elephant cemetery
Former French defender Bixente Lizarazu, a Mundial, European Championship and Champions League winner, criticised the latest controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese Football Federation on the Téléfoot l’After programme, warning that the striker’s age could see him end up in an ‘elephant cemetery’.
Scandal that saw Ronaldo quit the national team
Lizarazu said the dispute centred on the Portuguese Futebol federation hierarchy and culminated in Ronaldo walking away from the seleção Portuguesa. He described the episode as a scandal that forced the forward to abandon his Portugal duties. The former defender highlighted the damage such a rupture inflicts on the squad’s cohesion.
He blamed three actors for the impasse: the federation, head coach Jorge Jesus and Ronaldo himself. According to Lizarazu, the failure of all three parties constitutes a grave error. He called the outcome a catastrophe for the image of Portuguese football.
Lizarazu stressed that clear, assertive communication is essential. He urged a dialogue where the federation, coach and player agree on expectations, quoting a hypothetical line: “You are important to me, but you will play a part in this game and that one I will make you recover.” He warned that promising playing time then benching the striker erodes confidence.

Age, ego and the elephant cemetery warning
Turning to Ronaldo’s personal challenges, Lizarazu noted that ageing makes it hard for a player who has built an image of invincibility to accept reduced strength and speed. He lamented that this reality is inevitable for any athlete.
He praised Ronaldo’s earlier ego, saying it drove the forward to work obsessively and break records. Yet Lizarazu warned that the same ego can become a player’s worst enemy when it prevents acceptance of physical decline.
Concluding, Lizarazu delivered a stark personal message: “You have the age you have and you will end up in the elephant cemetery, I guarantee you.” The comment was framed as a caution for the veteran striker.

Lizarazu, who amassed more than 700 senior appearances, is a former Bordeaux and Bayern Munich stalwart and a French international. His trophy cabinet includes a Mundial, a European Championship and a Champions League among other honours. The defender’s own illustrious career underpins the weight of his remarks.
