Liverpool target Joel Ordoñez as defensive recruit

🇬🇧 6 June 2026

Liverpool FC have placed central defender Joel Ordoñez of Club Brugge at the top of their summer transfer targets. New manager Andoni Iraola is set to overhaul the back line. The club is reportedly willing to meet a €45 million valuation.

Ordoñez, 23, has attracted interest from multiple European sides after strong performances in the Belgian Pro League. His profile combines height, aerial ability and composure on the ball. Club Brugge list him among their most valuable assets.

Liverpool’s recruitment drive follows a defensive overhaul under Iraola, who arrived last month. The English side finished the previous season conceding more goals than any top‑six club. Strengthening the centre‑back area is a priority.

The Reds have already secured several midfield signings, but a reliable centre‑back remains missing. Iraola’s tactical blueprint favours a high‑line with a ball‑playing defender. Ordoñez fits that mould with his passing range.

Club Brugge’s management expect a substantial fee for the transfer. The €45 million price tag reflects market inflation for top defenders. A deal would see the Belgian champions lose a key pillar of their defence.

Liverpool aim to complete the signing before the summer window closes. If the transfer materialises, Ordoñez could join the squad for pre‑season training in July. The move would mark the first major defensive acquisition under Iraola.
