Liverpool secures Szoboszlai to 2031, ending Real Madrid speculation
Liverpool moved quickly to lock in Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, ensuring the club can focus on the season without the distraction of transfer speculation involving Real Madrid. The long‑term deal also plugs a strategic need for creative midfield depth as the English side prepares for upcoming campaigns.
Liverpool pursued Szoboszlai after the midfielder impressed at RB Leipzig, prompting the English club to activate his £60 million release clause.
The original five‑year contract, signed in 2023, was set to expire in June 2028, reflecting Liverpool’s long‑term belief in his abilities.
The new agreement replaces that deal and now runs until 2031, extending his stay by three additional years beyond the June 2028 expiry.
Liverpool paid £60 million in the summer of 2023 to trigger the release clause at RB Leipzig, securing the Hungarian international.
Agent Matthias Esterházi told WinWin Sports, “If you have a player like him, rumours about the big clubs are completely normal. As for his future, only he and I can speak formally.” He added that the extension “says everything about what he wanted to do, because no one forced him to extend the contract,” calling recent Real Madrid talk “meaningless rumours”.
After a demanding 2025/26 campaign and Hungary’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, Szoboszlai finally enjoyed overdue rest before pre‑season.
He is already listed in Liverpool’s 31‑man squad for the USA tour in Chicago, with senior players set to join later.
The outcome is clear: Szoboszlai stays, allowing Liverpool to move forward without transfer distraction, while the long‑term deal gives the midfielder stability as he looks to contribute in the coming seasons.
