Liverpool’s January gamble on Camara stalls as price soars

Liverpool are pursuing Senegalese Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, but a January transfer appears unlikely as Monaco now demand roughly €70 million (£58 million).
The Reds, under Spanish manager Andoni Iraola, sit fifth in the league, nine points behind Arsenal after the Gunners’ controversial win at Anfield on Sunday.
Why Liverpool need a midfield fix
Liverpool inherited a squad lacking key areas and do not realistically expect a title challenge, hoping an upward curve under Iraola and a few winter fixes.
One glaring deficiency is in the engine room, prompting winter‑window discussions at the club’s Kirkby training complex.
The Merseysiders have earmarked both Camara and Bournemouth forward Alex Scott as midfield options.
Club journalist David Lynch said on the Anfield Index YouTube channel that he would not be surprised if Liverpool had already done the groundwork on Camara, but that does not guarantee a January move at €50 million.
Lynch added that January deals are often tricky and Monaco are understood to be demanding nearer the €70 million mark, making any agreement difficult.
When asked if a January deal could happen, Lynch replied he does not think so and that Liverpool would need to off‑load a player to accommodate Camara.
Although Alexis Mac Allister is frequently mentioned as a possible departure, Lynch doubts Iraola would sanction his mid‑season exit.
Reports on Monday evening indicated Monaco are prepared to sanction Camara’s exit after a collapsed summer bid with Chelsea.
Earlier rumours that Liverpool’s interest caused the summer collapse were later dismissed by David Ornstein.
Monaco now price the player nearer €70 million, up from the €50 million (£43 million) they were willing to accept in the summer.
Chelsea, after their failed summer pursuit, have abandoned plans to sign Camara and are instead targeting Alex Scott, who now carries an inflated £100 million price tag.
Fabrizio Romano said Liverpool have been tracking Camara for a long time, have also looked at Alex Scott, and plan a significant midfield addition in 2027 rather than a backup player.
Camara has broken his silence on the failed Chelsea move and indicated his mind is set on a future Premier League transfer.
