Liverpool’s growing interest in Lamine Camara highlights midfield crisis

Liverpool’s growing interest in Lamine Camara highlights midfield crisis

Liverpool’s interest in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has intensified after a goalless draw with Fulham at Anfield, recently prompting a detailed midfield debate on the Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast where Dave Davis and David Lynch dissected the team’s performance.

Midfield struggles prompt search for answers

Andoni Iraola’s midfield failed to impose itself in the 0‑0 stalemate, leaving Liverpool searching for answers. Dominik Szoboszlai won only one of his ten duels while Ryan Gravenberch struggled both with and without possession. The lack of defensive contribution has sparked interest that grows in a new solution.

Camara’s defensive stats catch the eye

Dave Davis highlighted the defensive gap by comparing numbers. Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Gravenberch combined for just seventeen tackles, whereas Camara recorded twenty‑four in Ligue 1. Their three recoveries totalled forty‑two, while Camara logged thirty‑seven, suggesting he does “the stuff we don’t seem to be very good at”, Davis said.

David Lynch echoed the admiration, recalling a pre‑season video he reviewed. “He’s a really good player, by the way,” Lynch said, adding that “Liverpool definitely like him and there’s a potential for them to go in for him”. The Senegal international’s profile appears to match Liverpool’s needs.

Lynch warned that Ligue 1 statistics may not translate directly to the Premier League. “He’s doing it in a different league where it’s potentially easier to do it,” he explained, while insisting he is not playing Camara down and considers him excellent.

He also pointed to Ryan Gravenberch’s possession‑adjusted tackles and interceptions across Europe’s top five leagues, noting Gravenberch compares favourably with Camara. “The data sometimes can tell you one thing if you want it and another,” Lynch said, underscoring the need for deeper analysis. Iraola’s willingness to change personnel has already seen Gravenberch removed, Kostas Tsimikas given a chance ahead of Milos Kerkez and Ronald Araújo replacing Jeremie Frimpong at right‑back.

Transfer window closed, future options remain

With the summer transfer window now closed, Iraola must work with the current quartet of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and emerging youngster Trey Nyoni, developing the double‑pivot required for his system. Continued midfield woes could eventually force Liverpool back to the market. Camara, a Senegal international, remains an attractive profile.

Lynch suggested that persistent problems might prompt a January signing, with Camara likely featuring prominently in that conversation. Monaco remain in a strong negotiating position, and the 22‑year‑old is under contract until 2029 after a collapsed Chelsea move. His profile is attractive, but any move would depend on Liverpool’s assessment.

For now, Lynch’s balanced assessment stands: Liverpool like Camara, his qualities are obvious, and the current midfield debate makes the interest particularly intriguing. Whether Andoni Iraola ultimately needs him will depend on how his existing midfielders perform.
