Liverpool's FSG policy clouds £50m Araujo deal at Anfield

Liverpool's FSG policy clouds £50m Araujo deal at Anfield

Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are weighing a permanent deal for Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo, whose loan from Barcelona began this summer. The Reds hold a purchase option reported at £47million, £50m and €55m, but FSG’s policy makes the £50m Liverpool deal far from certain.

Defensive gap and strategic shift

Liverpool have struggled to find a reliable right‑back since the departure of a senior defender last season, prompting manager Andoni Iraola to prioritise versatility in his back line. Araujo’s ability to slot in at centre‑back and right‑back offers a solution that aligns with the club’s need for stability. However, Fenway Sports Group’s recruitment model favours players with long‑term resale value, which could clash with a permanent signing.

Loan spell and early impact

The 27‑year‑old Uruguayan joined Liverpool on loan from Barcelona in the summer, with the Reds retaining an option to buy. He has featured in all four Premier League matches so far, starting against Ipswich Town and Atletico Madrid at Anfield. Playing at right‑back, he helped keep a clean sheet in a 2‑0 win over Ipswich and supplied the assist for Dominik Szoboszlai’s equaliser in a 2‑1 victory at Atletico.

Speaking to Movistar, Ronald Araujo said, “Liverpool is a big club like Barcelona. You have to give your best and there are high expectations.” He added, “I love playing in this stadium; it is a very special and lovely place, and good results make us feel very satisfied.”

Andoni Iraola praised the defender’s humility and physical robustness, noting, “He has come with humility, is experienced and can play anywhere we need him.” He also highlighted that Araujo has already logged more minutes than expected early in the season and shows no signs of cramping.

Financial considerations and FSG policy

The purchase option has been reported at £47million, £50m and €55m, reflecting divergent sources on the exact valuation. FSG’s policy of avoiding large outlays on players without clear future market potential makes a £50m Liverpool deal “far from certain”, according to the reports.

Barcelona have labelled Araujo surplus to requirements, and he previously turned down an offer from Juventus before choosing Liverpool. Historically, Liverpool have only permanently signed two players after loan spells in the past decade, underscoring the rarity of a successful conversion.

Araujo will turn 28 in March, a factor that may weigh against a permanent deal under FSG’s preference for younger assets. The option can be exercised from June onwards, giving the club time to negotiate a lower fee, especially as his salary ranks among the highest in the squad. Bruna Reis, Senior Sports Journalist, noted the situation on Sep 24, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the €55m clause.

Fans continue to debate the future of the Uruguayan, while the club’s official channels share a View Image of his performances. OUR LIVERPOOL SPORT remains focused on the upcoming fixtures as the decision looms.
