Liverpool’s comeback caps shaky start to Champions League

On Tuesday, Liverpool turned a two‑goal deficit into a 4‑3 victory over Villarreal at Anfield, preserving a flawless start to their Champions League campaign with nine points from three matches. The comeback showcased the Reds’ attacking depth and resilience after early setbacks.

Villarreal seize early control

Villarreal coach Inigo Perez, a former assistant of Andoni Iraola, put his side ahead inside the first half hour. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring after four minutes when Virgil van Dijk’s attempted header fell to Alisson Becker, and Sergi Cardona doubled the lead before the half‑hour mark.

Virgil van Dijk’s early mis‑header back to goalkeeper Alisson Becker set the tone, as the defender’s lapse allowed Mikautadze to tap in from close range. The Dutch captain later helped organise the defence, but the early concession highlighted the need for sharper concentration.

Liverpool overturn deficit

Liverpool responded before the break as Alexis Mac Allister headed in from a Kostas Tsimikas corner and Ronald Araujo met a Rio Ngumoha cross to level the scores. Mac Allister struck again twenty‑five minutes from time, and substitute Florian Wirtz completed the comeback in the second half.

Iraola omitted his three £100 million forwards – Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and the third on the bench – focusing on the upcoming Premier League clash with Brighton on Sunday. The Spaniards also struggled to defend crosses, a weakness Liverpool exploited throughout the match.

Florian Wirtz’s low drive hit the underside of the bar before he headed home to make it 3‑2. Three minutes later Cody Gakpo set up Wirtz for his first goal of the season, while Tani Oluwaseyi finished from an Ayoze Perez cross to restore parity. Villarreal’s defence remained porous, allowing Liverpool to hold on and secure a place in the last‑16.

The win lifts Liverpool to nine points, level with Paris Saint‑Germain at the top of Group E, and secures their place in the round of 16 with a perfect record.

The club’s digital hub lists the match under Soccer, LOI, Rugby, Golf, Racing, Upgrade, League, Horse, Boxing, Motorsport, Athletics, NFL and NBA, offering Live Video Review Podcasts and extra Sport Family content where fans can See More Stories and BACK the Reds in the Sports section.

Liverpool now turn their attention to the Premier League fixture against Brighton on Sunday, needing to tighten a defence that has conceded three goals despite the attacking heroics. A solid performance will keep them on course for a deep Champions League run.
