Liverpool’s £125 million Isak signing tests Andoni Iraola’s rebuild

Liverpool’s £125 million Isak signing tests Andoni Iraola’s rebuild

Liverpool completed a £125 million signing of Swedish striker Alexander Isak on 1 September, and the player will wear his first Liverpool shirt since May on Sunday in Chicago, marking a fresh start under manager Andoni Iraola. The fee makes Isak one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history.

Liverpool secured his signature after the season had already begun and immediately began integrating him into pre‑season plans.

The club pursued Isak to replace the goal output of Mohamed Salah, whose scoring has dwindled. Isak arrived with a record of 44 Premier League goals across his final two seasons at Newcastle, showcasing speed, technical skill and the ability to finish with either foot.

Isak’s inaugural Liverpool campaign under manager Arne Slot never gained momentum and was subsequently wrecked by injury. A reset under Andoni Iraola now offers one of the few chances for revival at Anfield.

Immediate international breaks and further pauses in October and November forced Liverpool to manage him through a tailored fitness programme without a rhythm to build on. He scored his first Premier League goal late November away at West Ham, followed by a second in a 2‑1 victory over Tottenham on 20 December.

The season effectively ended when Micky van de Ven’s challenge resulted in a broken leg and a fibula fracture that required ankle surgery, sidelining Isak until April. The injury halted any momentum he had begun to build.

Despite the setback, Isak featured at the World Cup, scoring once and providing three assists. Liverpool now lack Mohamed Salah as their primary scorer and look to shift the burden onto Isak.

In Chicago, manager Andoni Iraola said, “Alex is exciting. He has come to pre‑season in a good place, had a good World Cup, feeling comfortable.” He added, “He is going to massive for us,” and expressed hope that Isak can play against Leeds after three or four weeks of quality training.

A Liverpool legend insisted the £125 million price tag will not trouble Isak, stating he simply requires minutes, fitness and goals to fulfil his potential. The legend added that the striker’s impact will be measured on the pitch, not by the transfer fee.
