Liverpool push to lock down Ngumoha after Champions League heroics

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool are in conversations to secure Rio Ngumoha on a deal after the winger dazzled against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Ngumoha earned UEFA’s player of the match award by providing two assists in the Reds’ 4‑3 comeback win at Anfield. The performance has accelerated the club’s push to lock down the youngster.

The Reds found themselves 2‑0 down before Alexis Mac Allister headed the ball into the far corner from a Kostas Tsimikas set‑piece, sparking the comeback. Ngumoha then delivered his first assist in first‑half stoppage time, shrugging off Georges Mikautadze and sending a cross that Ronald Araujo headed home to level. The goal marked the turning point as Liverpool began to press forward.

In the 65th minute Ngumoha produced his second assist, breezing past his marker with an excellent first touch before racing down the right flank to set up Mac Allister for a simple finish. Florian Wirtz then doubled Liverpool’s advantage, extending the lead. Villarreal later reduced the deficit with a late goal from Tani Oluwaseyi.

Contract talks intensify

Fabrizio Romano shared a video on X stating that Ngumoha was fantastic for Liverpool in the Champions League, noting the two assists and that the youngster is the youngest ever to deliver an assist for Liverpool in the competition. He added that active conversations are ongoing between Rio Ngumoha and Liverpool over a new long‑term contract. Julian Ward, Liverpool’s sporting director since returning to Anfield, has listed securing the 18‑year‑old as a top priority.

Future and competition

Ngumoha’s current contract runs until June 2028, yet interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich has grown this year. Liverpool believe that extending his deal with lucrative terms will deter the German and English clubs from pursuing him. The player told reporters that discussions are now with his agent and that he simply lets the football speak, adding he enjoys playing for the Reds and hopes to continue.

Both Alan Shearer and Liverpool supporters praised Ngumoha’s display against Villarreal, highlighting his impact on the comeback. Meanwhile, a second Liverpool player received commendation after Real Madrid decided against moving for him, underscoring the club’s growing reputation for retaining talent. The ongoing negotiations suggest the Reds aim to secure the winger’s future as part of their broader strategy.
