Liverpool prepare to cut ties with Bajcetic as deadline looms

Liverpool are set to sanction the exit of 21‑year‑old midfielder Stefan Bajcetic as he prepares to re‑join his former Spanish side Celta Vigo before the Tuesday deadline, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season and no first‑team appearance since May 2024.

Midfield reshuffle leaves Bajcetic surplus

Andoni Iraola has focused his summer signings on strengthening the defence and the forward line, leaving Liverpool’s midfield untouched. Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister remain the most regularly used midfielders, while Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni sit further down the pecking order. With academy graduate Curtis Jones already departed for Inter Milan, the club sees little room for Bajcetic, who has not featured since May 2024.

Deal includes buy‑back option

The 21‑year‑old began his career with Spanish side Celta Vigo before moving to Anfield, where Jurgen Klopp praised his quality after a debut at 17. Injuries have limited his progress and he is no longer part of the plans on Merseyside. Reports suggest Liverpool will accept a fee that remains under discussion but will insert a buy‑back clause, aiming to retain a future option on the midfielder.

Bajcetic’s contract expires at the end of this season and he has not made a first‑team appearance since May 2024. His last competitive outing came in May 2025 while on loan at Las Palmas, adding to a total of 22 appearances for Liverpool, 19 of which arrived in the 2022/23 campaign. The move is expected to be finalised before Tuesday’s deadline.

Comments from Sport writer Samuel Meade, Sports Brand Writer, at 22:16 on 30 Aug 2026, View 2 Images, confirm the impending transfer. The report notes that talk of Bajcetic returning to Celta Vigo has been ongoing for weeks.

With the midfield lacking fresh signings, Liverpool appear ready to free up wages and squad space for future acquisitions. The departure of Bajcetic, a product of the club’s academy, underscores the shift in Iraola’s strategy as the Reds prepare for the next season.
