Liverpool postpones contract talks, Alisson stays star goalkeeper

Liverpool has put talks about a new contract with Alisson Becker on hold for now and keeps the 33‑year‑old Brazilian as the star goalkeeper in goal. His contract expires after the 2026/27 season, with the already‑used option extended until then.

Contract option and timetable

The option was activated at the start of 2026, so the contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. According to TEAMtalk, formal negotiations are only expected to start later in the year.

Alisson, 33 years old and turning 34 on October 2, remains in focus. Liverpool wants to monitor his form and health over the coming months in order to decide on a new contract at the right time.

Andoni Iraola still names Alisson as his first choice. The goalkeeper has been in goal from the start in all matches so far this season.

In goal he competes with Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was signed with the future in mind but has not yet earned a starting spot.

In addition, Liverpool brought in the young Lucca Brughmans to broaden the goalkeeper options.

If Alisson leaves the club without a new contract, he could depart on a free transfer in the summer of 2027. The postponement of talks does not mean Liverpool wants to release him.

The talks could still start this year, giving Liverpool more time to assess his performances and decide whether one of the younger keepers is ready to take over the spot.
