Liverpool overturns deficit and secures narrow win over Atlético
Liverpool turned in the opening match of the Champions League against Atlético Madrid despite an early deficit and won narrowly in the end, showing their comeback qualities.
Early lead goal for the visitors
The visitors from Madrid surprised Liverpool with an unusual three‑man defence and took the lead after 17 minutes. Julián Álvarez played a precise pass into the depth, which Marcos Llorente coolly turned into a goal. The goal was Llorente's fifth Champions League goal on the Anfield Road.
Liverpool reacts and secures victory
Liverpool needed time to adjust to the visitors' tactics. Shortly before halftime, after a strong effort from Milos Kerkez and a lay‑off from Ronald Araújo, the equaliser came. Dominik Szoboszlai scored to make it 1‑1.
After the break, Liverpool took control. Five minutes after the restart, Alexis Mac Allister struck, collected a rebound and hammered home from about 20 metres, an unstoppable shot. The strike bolstered the position of the Argentine world champion for a possible contract extension.
Atlético tried to turn the result around and launched several offensive changes. The Reds, however, defended with concentration and did not lose their composure.
The evening on the Anfield Road remained hard‑fought, but the Reds kept the upper hand until the end in the Champions League duel. The narrow 2‑1 result represented an important victory at the start of the Champions League.
For manager Andoni Iraola, the match provided a successful debut on the big European stage. His team showed quick adaptability after the early setback.
