Liverpool outbids Bayern to secure the ‘new Kaka’ for Reds

Liverpool have outmaneuvered Bayern Munich to sign 17‑year‑old Colombian playmaker Samuel Martinez, dubbed the “new Kaka”, agreeing an initial £750,000 fee with Atletico Nacional and arranging for the youngster to join the Reds after he turns 18 in the coming season.

Good news for Liverpool is that the club’s strategy emphasises a clear pathway for emerging talent and aims to fill a creative gap in its attacking midfield. The Reds are also keen to provide a route for the best young British prospects, highlighted by 17‑year‑old Rio Ngumoha’s upcoming key role under manager Andoni Iraola next season.

Bayern Munich were linked to Martinez, but Liverpool outbid the Bavarians for his signature. The German TZ report called him the “new Kaka”. Bayern had identified former Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, now at FC Hollywood, as an ideal mentor for the youngster.

An initial transfer fee of around £750,000 was agreed with Atletico Nacional, and Martinez completed a medical in England over the weekend.

Liverpool also completed big‑money deals for Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni to strengthen its attacking options, while defensive depth was bolstered by under‑the‑radar acquisitions Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

International regulations prevent overseas players from officially signing until they are 18, meaning Martinez will officially become a Liverpool player next year. He is expected to feature for Atletico Nacional’s first team before embarking on his Premier League adventure in 2027, with the club hoping he will first develop with its youth and under‑age sides before stepping up to the senior squad.
