Liverpool gamble on Colombian teen Samuel Martinez with $1 m deal
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of 17‑year‑old Colombian playmaker Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional, agreeing a five‑year contract until 2032 and a transfer fee of about $1 million plus a future sell‑on clause, with a pre‑contract to be finalised after his medical.
The agreement also contains a pre‑contract that will be finalised once the youngster passes a medical. This clause ensures the transfer proceeds only after Liverpool are satisfied with his fitness.
The Colombian was first linked with a move to the Reds back in May, when Pipe Sierra reported the interest and later supplied photographic evidence of Martinez heading to Liverpool for a medical. Sierra now says the player is on his way to the club and will soon sign the pre‑contract.
Liverpool view Martinez as an incredibly exciting prospect who could develop into a superstar, a level of talent the club believes justifies the investment. The Reds see his technical ability and vision as a long‑term asset for the midfield.
Because English clubs cannot officially sign a 17‑year‑old from outside the UK, Liverpool must wait until Martinez turns 18 next April before he can be registered. Consequently, he will not be eligible to play for the first team until the 2027/2028 campaign.
The deal marks Liverpool's second summer transfer and provides Atletico Nacional with an immediate $1 million windfall and a sell‑on clause that could become valuable later. The Colombian side therefore secures both a financial boost and a future stake in any subsequent move.
Both sides secure a clear pathway: the Reds add a future star, while the Colombian club benefits financially and retains a stake in his potential future moves.
