Liverpool eye Tottenham captain as Van Dijk nears contract end

With Virgil van Dijk entering the final year of his contract, Liverpool are scouting for a long‑term successor and have placed Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven high on their defensive shortlist.

Defensive succession plan

Liverpool’s background work focuses on finding a left‑sided, physically dominant centre‑back to replace Van Dijk, whose deal expires in June 2027. The club’s interest aligns with manager Iraola’s ambition to rebuild the back line beyond the ageing Dutch star.

Van de Ven’s credentials

The 25‑year‑old has been admired at Anfield for his left‑footedness, quickness across the ground and proven Premier League experience, having made 34 league appearances in 45 matches across all competitions last season.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider, “Van de Ven is somebody who has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time… He’s certainly somebody who would fit the bill when they’re looking to replace Van Dijk, because he’s left‑sided, physically dominant, he’s the captain at Tottenham too.”

Van de Ven signed a new five‑year contract in August and was named Spurs captain for the 2026‑27 campaign, with Tottenham describing him as a cornerstone of their rebuild.

Transfer hurdles

Spurs have endured a difficult opening to the season, remaining winless after five league matches under Roberto De Zerbi, yet there is no immediate pressure to sell. Liverpool would likely need to meet a substantial fee and persuade Tottenham to release their newly appointed captain.

While Liverpool continue to monitor the defender, the combination of a long‑term contract at Spurs and the club’s public intent to build around him makes any move a major challenge.
