Liverpool eye Barcelona Araujo in season‑long loan to reshape defence

Liverpool are on the brink of securing a season‑long loan for Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, with a future option to buy the 27‑year‑old centre‑back. He will join the Reds’ squad this weekend as part of the club’s summer reinforcement plan.

The move follows the departure of Ibrahima Konaté, who left the Reds on a free transfer for Real Madrid, leaving Liverpool in need of an experienced centre‑back to rebuild their backline.

Araujo arrives with a strong pedigree, having helped Barcelona win La Liga in three of the past four seasons, and he served as the club captain during the 2023‑24 campaign.

The Uruguay international has earned 27 caps for his national team, adding valuable international experience to Liverpool’s defence.

At Barcelona his role has diminished in recent months, managing just 11 league starts last season as Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi formed the preferred central defensive partnership.

Since joining Barcelona from Boston River in 2018, Araujo has made over 200 appearances for the Spanish club, providing extensive experience and depth.

The loan, with an attached purchase option, reflects Liverpool’s proactive approach to squad reinforcement during the summer window, with his physical presence and leadership expected to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s defensive options.

For Barcelona, the deal offers a pathway to reduce the squad size of a player whose minutes have been limited, while retaining a future purchase option that could yield a financial return should Liverpool exercise the clause.
