Liverpool eye £15m former Reds midfielder as FSG keep tabs on Morton

Tyler Morton, the 23‑year‑old who left Liverpool for Lyon in 2025 for a package totalling £15m, is again being watched by the Reds as they scout a new number six ahead of the January window.

Confirmed interest from the Anfield hierarchy

A second source, Graeme Bailey, confirmed on 24 September that Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has been impressed by Morton's performances in France. The insider said the club are "keeping tabs" on the former England U21 international and that his form has sparked suggestions of a possible return to Anfield.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke later verified the claim, stating Liverpool are monitoring Morton’s progress but have not taken concrete steps yet. He added that the midfielder remains under contract with Lyon until 2030, meaning any move would require a deal with the French side.

Midfield options and market context

Last summer, Liverpool faced criticism for not signing a holding midfielder, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister described as forward‑thinking, while Ryan Gravenberch was noted as defensive but not a "second coming of N’Golo Kante". Wataru Endo is another defensive specialist, though regarded as a squad player, and the Reds have faith in Trey Nyoni as a controller.

The sale of Curtis Jones earlier this season sharpened the focus on midfield recruitment, yet owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) appeared content with existing options. Without a buy‑back clause in Morton's deal, Liverpool have no guaranteed route back, and Lyon are expected to fight hard to retain him.

Overall, the market sees Liverpool balancing the desire for a defensive midfielder against the constraints of contracts and fees, with Morton emerging as a realistic, albeit challenging, target.
