Liverpool chase two forwards as £70m deal looms with Spurs

Liverpool chase two forwards as £70m deal looms with Spurs

The Premier League giants Liverpool have confirmed that a £70 million transfer deal remains on the table after an agreement was finally reached, reports say on 20 Aug 2026, with less than two weeks left before the summer window shuts.

Manager Andoni Iraola’s first league line‑up will not differ much from Arne Slot’s side, as the Spaniard has only added Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo this summer. A potential sale of Dutch winger Cody Gakpo to Tottenham is described as a non‑starter unless Liverpool can bring in two new forwards. This limited activity highlights the gap left by Gakpo’s possible departure.

The club kicks off the 2026/27 campaign against Newcastle United on Sunday, giving the new signings little time to integrate before the first Premier League test. The season‑opening fixture adds urgency to any late‑window moves.

Transfer target and £70m deal

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is reported to value Gakpo at £70 million and is keen to improve his left‑wing options. Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel that negotiations are realistic, personal terms are not an issue and Gakpo is open to the switch. This potential move could reshape Liverpool’s attacking plan.

Other window activity

The story is illustrated by an ImagesAndoni photo credited to Darren Staples / AFP via Getty Images, with the caption reading Liverpool(Image. Curtis Jones’ 16‑year association with Liverpool looks to be ending, as the Reds have agreed a £30 million (€35 million) fee with Inter Milan for the midfielder. Personal terms have already been agreed and a medical is planned.

If Jones departs, he will have made 228 appearances, scored 22 goals and provided 25 assists, winning six major honours including two Premier League titles. This record underscores his contribution over more than a decade.

We still need to secure two forwards before the window slams shut in less than two weeks, and any medical or paperwork delays could jeopardise the £70 million deal. The club’s ability to finalise both the Gakpo move and the forward signings will determine the squad’s shape for the season opener.
