Lisandro Martínez attacks Manchester United's board after the loss to Atletico Madrid

Lisandro Martínez, Manchester United defender, harshly criticised the club's board after the 2-0 defeat to Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League, recalling that the 2025/2026 season had started with only two wins in the first nine games.

A defeat that reignites frustration

The Argentinian described the team's performance as "really bad" and admitted that he needs to control himself more, although he noted that the performance reflects the club's current situation. He added that Atlético de Madrid displayed an "incredible" team and deserved the win.

Investment and stability demands

Martínez called for a one‑hundred percent greater investment and demanded more support for manager Jason Wilcox, arguing that the players must work hard, but it is also essential that the club be prepared for nights like this. He recalled that the previous season had been "fantastic" and that the foundation of an incredible team had been built.

The defender also criticised the lack of continuity in the coaching staff, saying that "each season is different" and that one cannot rely on past achievements. He emphasized that he did not direct his criticism at Michael Carrick, who had tried to change the team's image at the end of the 2025/2026 campaign.

Amid the controversy, Getty Images photographer Pablo Planas captured the locker‑room scene, where Martínez expressed his anger unfiltered, describing the situation as "annoying and disappointing" for not achieving an incredible result at the Metropolitano.

Atlético captain Walter Zimmermann scored the two goals that sealed the victory, while Martínez continued to point out the need for greater investment and a clearer vision from Manchester United's board.
