Lineker says City should accept title stripping amid league scandal
Gary Lineker contrasted the bright memory of the 2022 FA Cup semi‑final between Manchester City and Liverpool with the bleak prospect of severe sanctions for the club, saying a full acceptance of punishment would be a "blessing" for the Premier League.
Lineker’s view on possible sanctions
Speaking at Leaders Week London 2026 at Stamford Bridge, Lineker warned that the most likely outcome could be the stripping of the titles City won between 2009 and 2018. He added that such a step would protect the integrity of the league and spare the club further embarrassment.
He argued that the club should simply admit its errors, accept any fine, transfer bans, points deduction or even expulsion, and move on for the good of the game.
City’s stance and the FFP verdict
Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial‑fair‑play charges brought by the Premier League, after an independent panel identified sham payments totalling £900 million.

The club continues to proclaim its innocence and has lodged an appeal, insisting that “irrefutable evidence” will overturn the decision, despite ten grounds for appeal that appear unlikely to succeed.
Potential penalties include a hefty fine, a transfer ban, a points deduction and possible expulsion from the Premier League, with the additional threat of title removal.
Lineker recalled his own experience when English clubs were banned from European competition, noting that players and fans would bear the brunt of any further sanctions.

He concluded that the Premier League would not want a conspiracy narrative to dominate, and that a swift, severe punishment would help the league restore credibility.
