Liminar blocks Eagle's attempt to sell Botafogo SAF
On 9 September 2026 the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court issued a Liminar that bars Eagle Bidco from selling, transferring or altering control of its shares in the Botafogo SAF, effectively freezing any deal with the GDA Luma consortium and keeping the club’s football arm under the current ownership structure.
The order, reported by O Globo, explicitly prohibits Eagle from selling or altering the control of its 49 percent stake in the SAF, thereby blocking the proposed acquisition of a 90 percent share by GDA Luma.
Ownership split fuels legal battle
Eagle Bidco, administered by Cork Gully, holds 49 percent of the Botafogo SAF while the club associative retains 51 percent after invoking a subscription‑bonus clause over alleged fraud in the contributions of John Textor.
John Textor, who led the club from 2022 to 2026, described himself as the “Godfather” of the Mais Tradicional project and wrote that the decision gives “greater legal security while the processes in Brazil continue”, adding that it is “an opportunity to reorganise, restore peace and focus on the future of Botafogo”.
The SAF of Botafogo rejected Textor’s approach, accusing him of generating instability and reminding that Brazilian courts have already handed him successive defeats on related matters.
