Leyton Orient boost defensive aggression with Olowu from Stockport

Leyton Orient have bolstered their defence by signing centre‑back Joseph Olowu from Stockport County, a move that aligns with head coach Richie Wellens' plan to increase defensive aggression.

Head coach Richie Wellens said Joseph Olowu fits the profile he was seeking to raise Leyton Orient's defensive aggression. He highlighted Olowu's size and duel statistics, emphasizing strength both aerially and on the ground.

Wellens added that Olowu's quickness enables the side to press aggressively and win possession back. Leyton Orient completed a permanent transfer of the centre‑back from Stockport County for an undisclosed fee.

The 26‑year‑old signed a three‑year contract with the club. The acquisition marks the O’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window.

The move reunites Olowu with Wellens, who first brought him to Doncaster Rovers in 2021. Wellens had previously signed the defender at the South Yorkshire club.

The prior working relationship is expected to smooth Olowu's integration into the squad. During his spell at Doncaster Rovers, Olowu made 126 appearances.

He was part of the Doncaster side that won the League Two title in 2025. Those performances underlined his consistency and experience.

In the summer of 2025, Olowu transferred to Stockport County. He featured in 31 league matches as Stockport reached the League One play‑off final.

The defender’s experience in a promotion‑contending side adds further value to Leyton Orient. Wellens said, "Joseph is a good size and his data on duels is very good, both aerially and on the ground. He is quick and allows us to be very aggressive when we want to win possession back. On a personal note, he is a brilliant lad and a great character who will come in and be one of our leaders. This is a really good signing for us."

Olowu becomes the O’s seventh summer acquisition, underscoring Leyton Orient’s active recruitment. All deals completed in July 2026 confirm the club’s transfer activity for the season.
