Leverkusen dominate in Leipzig thanks to Miguel Gutiérrez

At RB Leipzig's stadium, under the floodlights of Bundesliga Matchday 4 (20/09/2026), Bayer Leverkusen took the initiative and won clearly, thanks to the double contribution of Miguel Gutiérrez, who scored and assisted.

Gutiérrez, the key piece of the victory

Miguel Gutiérrez's precise cross was collected by striker Patrick Schick, who volleyed it and opened the scoring just before halftime (44'). In the second half, the former Girona player was decisive again, sealing the second goal by finishing a counter‑attack led by Ibrahim Maza, who had returned from injury (57').

Match details and impact on the table

The match ended 2‑0 in favour of Leverkusen, their second win of the season, and it allowed them to add seven points, moving up to fifth place and overtaking the team managed by Martín Demichelis, which remains with six points in eighth position.

Martin Meissner, reporter for Ap-LaPresse, noted that although historically the clashes between the two clubs usually end in blowouts, this occasion was characterised by calm and respect, until Gutiérrez's play broke the balance.

Pablo Planas, head of the Bundesliga, recalled that Borussia Dormtund is the clear dominant of the competition, but that Bayer Leverkusen also aims to be a serious contender, even against Bayern Munich.

Coach Carles Martínez led the Leverkusen side, which featured Afonso Moreira, the only Portuguese on the match sheet, as a starter on the wing.

Christopher Nkunku also featured, scoring in the 34th minute, although the goal was ruled out for offside.

After the win, Leverkusen prepares to face Mainz 05 in the next round, while RB Leipzig will host Frankfurt.
