Les Mauves' Vitor Bruno backs long break ahead of restart
Vitor Bruno, coach of Sporting Anderlecht, said he is eager to get back on the pitch as the Pro League resumes after three weeks of inactivity and has justified the lengthy pause granted to his squad during the international break.
Break sparks debate in Belgium
Bruno explained that the eight‑day rest was given to players who were not called up for national teams, arguing that they had been playing matches every four days since July and therefore deserved the time off. He added that everyone followed the programme to the letter and that his affection for the squad grows with each training session.
The decision has generated considerable discussion across the country, with Bruno noting that if the team wins its upcoming match, the break will be hailed as brilliant, whereas a loss would invite criticism.
Sporting Anderlecht, known as the Mauves, will restart their campaign on Saturday at the Cercle Brugge ground. Bruno described Cercle Brugge as a side whose league position does not truly reflect its quality, suggesting they are better than their second‑to‑last place implies.
After the three‑week hiatus, the Pro League is set to resume its fixtures next weekend, a development that Bruno welcomed, saying he looks forward to seeing his players back on the field.
