Lens upset forces PSG to widen Ligue 1 title focus

Paris Saint‑Germain (PSG) began the 2026‑2027 campaign with a 1‑0 defeat to RC Lens in the Trophée des Champions, a loss Luis Enrique described as a warning rather than an excuse, insisting the title race in Ligue 1 will involve far more than just the Sang et Or.

Defeat sets a sobering tone

Battu by RC Lens, the match saw the young defender Kyllian Antonio sent off after a reckless tackle, a decision former referee Saïd Ennjimi called ‘largely justified’. The red card left Lens with ten men but did not prevent the 1‑0 victory that marked PSG’s season opener.

Luis Enrique refused to place blame on his squad, stating after the game that no excuses would be offered for the early setback. In his press conference he also outlined the shape of a Ligue 1 season he expects to be fiercely contested, emphasizing PSG’s squad depth and experience in big occasions.

Enrique broadens the title race

« Si l’on pense à ce qu’ils ont fait l’an passé, ce sera un adversaire difficile. Plus Monaco, Marseille, Lille et tous les autres, c’est un championnat difficile. »

The Spanish‑born coach named Monaco, Marseille and Lille alongside Lens as additional threats to PSG’s dominance. Le champion de France reste le grand favori, but the margin for error is shrinking.

Enrique warned that limiting the fight for the title to the Sang et Or would be a mistake, urging his side to stay performant and aware that any lapse could narrow their margin of error. He reminded that Paris will be scrutinised everywhere, and that the Lens win serves as a first warning.

The early loss juxtaposed with Enrique’s broader warning underlines that PSG’s path to the championship will demand consistency beyond a single match. While the club remains the favorite, the message is clear: complacency will be punished in a Ligue 1 season where many clubs can challenge.
