Lens ban fans from Lille derby after flare chaos in Belgium

On a cold evening at the Stade Bollaert, a lone Lens supporter stared at the empty away end, aware that the club had decided to withhold tickets for the upcoming LOSC Lille derby. The move, announced earlier this week, aims to curb the repeat misconduct that has plagued the supporters' voice from the north. The club’s Voix from the Nord region echoed the decision.
RC Lens confirmed it will not sell any away‑end tickets to its fans for the match against LOSC Lille, a step taken after recent disturbances. The blood‑and‑gold side, known as Sang et Or, hopes the measure will deter future incidents.
Champions League flare incident
The decision follows the Wednesday Champions League clash at Club Brugge, where numerous smoke flares were ignited and some were hurled toward a Belgian stand occupied by supporters with reduced mobility.
Lens had already been sanctioned for its supporters’ behaviour during a trip to Prague in September, and UEFA officials have warned that additional penalties are likely if the pattern continues.
Representatives of several supporters’ groups are scheduled to meet Lens management shortly, as club officials expressed exasperation at the dangerous and repeated actions of a minority of fans.
A similar episode occurred ten days earlier in the away fixture at Troyes, when dozens of smoke bombs were set off, forcing a brief suspension of play.
