Lennart Karl celebrates opening goal for Atletico and retorts to Uli Hoeneß

Lennart Karl responded with a loud celebration over his leading goal for FC Bayern in the Champions League match at Atletico Madrid, to answer the recent headlines about him. After scoring in the 54th minute, he initially celebrated with his teammates in a jubilation cluster. He then couldn’t resist showing a provocative “Bla‑Bla” gesture with both hands on his ears, clearly directed at his critics.

Gestures against Critics and Hoeneß

The gesture could have been aimed at FC Bayern’s honorary president and club patron Uli Hoeneß, who in an interview with Die Welt on Sunday said he wanted to have a serious conversation with the 18‑year‑old player. Hoeneß emphasized that Karl is “far from being a superstar, young players need humility” and that comparisons with Olise would not do him any good.

Ballack Defends and Criticizes

Former international Michael Ballack appeared as an adviser to the young attacking jewel and defended Karl around the top match against Borussia Dortmund last weekend, further fueling the media coverage. Ballack said: “That Uli Hoeneß criticizes this outward presentation is legitimate, but that he publicly makes Lennart a target because of it is also clear.”

He also attacked FC Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl and questioned his statements about Karl’s performance development.

Eberl, questioned after the match against the BVB, expressed uncertainty about whether Ballack had spoken as an expert or as the player’s adviser, and described it as difficult to conduct a media dispute. He emphasized that Karl’s development might have a dent, but that he is again moving upward and on the right track, and praised his attitude. Karl missed the World Cup due to a muscle bundle tear in his thigh shortly before the tournament began and struggled to find form at the start of the season. In the recent matches he, however, showed a clear upward trajectory, with the important goal against Atletico being regarded as a provisional crowning.
