Leipzig’s captain David Raum faces salary test as contract talks loom
In the quiet of the Red Bull Arena, Leipzig captain David Raum laces his boots, aware that his contract runs only until 30 June 2027. The 28‑year‑old German defender is set to enter talks with the club in the coming weeks, reported on 2 May.
Although no formal negotiations have begun, the club expects concrete discussions within the next few weeks. Raum ranks among Leipzig’s top earners, trailing only Lucas Kreuzer, and the talks will hinge on whether his wages fit the club’s salary model. His future beyond next season therefore remains undecided.
The defender began his career at Greuther Fürth, moved on to Hoffenheim and joined Leipzig in the summer of 2022. Since becoming captain last season he has featured in 149 official matches, scoring seven goals and providing thirty assists as a left‑back. Internationally, Raum debuted for Germany in September 2021, has earned 39 caps and was selected for two FIFA World Cups. Images: Getty.
