Leicester City captaincy deal puts Harry Souttar move to Sheffield United in doubt

Leicester City captaincy deal puts Harry Souttar move to Sheffield United in doubt

Sheffield United’s hopes of signing Harry Souttar from Leicester City have suffered a setback after Ben Nelson’s anterior cruciate ligament injury elevated Souttar to the Foxes’ captaincy.

The Blades had been in advanced talks with Leicester over a permanent deal for the defender, who spent the first half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Bramall Lane before his own ACL rupture ended that spell early. Those talks were progressing, with Sheffield United head coach Chris Wilder confirming to BBC Radio Sheffield that conversations with Leicester had already taken place and that Souttar “has got history with us.”

Leicester City manager Russell Martin confirmed that Souttar will captain the team in their upcoming EFL Cup match against Northampton Town, a decision that underscores the defender’s elevated status following Nelson’s injury. Martin described Nelson’s ACL rupture as “really disappointing. Sad for him, sad for us,” and revealed the Australian would miss most of the 2026-27 season.

Nelson, who made 27 appearances for Leicester in the Championship last season, had captained the team in their pre-season friendly against Genoa before the injury occurred. His absence leaves a significant void in Leicester’s defensive plans, and the Foxes’ need to replace him may now reduce the likelihood of selling Souttar, who remains under contract until 2028.

For Sheffield United, the timing could not be worse. Souttar’s potential move had been seen as a reunion after his loan stint at Bramall Lane, but his new captaincy role at Leicester complicates any transfer. Wilder had previously told BBC Radio Sheffield that the club had already held discussions with Leicester over taking Souttar, and that “the conversations will be ongoing.”

The injury also casts uncertainty over Souttar’s own ambitions. Had the transfer gone ahead, he would have been returning to the Championship with Sheffield United, but now faces the prospect of another season in League One with Leicester. His contract runs until 2028, meaning he may have little choice but to remain at The King Power Stadium, though the exact proximity of a Bramall Lane switch before Nelson’s injury remains unclear.

West Ham were also previously linked with Souttar, with the club’s fan site describing him as the “defender-in-waiting” as recently as 20 July. However, those links have since been overshadowed by the Sheffield United interest, which Wilder framed as a reunion given Souttar’s prior loan spell.

Martin’s decision to name Souttar as captain for the Northampton match signals a short-term tactical adjustment, but it also sends a strong signal about the defender’s future role at Leicester. That message, combined with Nelson’s long-term absence, makes a move to Bramall Lane far less likely this summer.

With the transfer window still open for more than three weeks, Leicester could yet bring in another defender and pursue a different course. But for now, the Blades’ pursuit of Souttar has been dealt a significant blow by events neither club could have anticipated.
