Leeds United leave Lukas Nmecha hanging with January exit – Exclusive
Leeds United are refusing to rush into a fresh contract for German striker Lukas Nmecha, whose current deal runs out next summer. Sources describe the situation as fluid, effectively leaving the 27‑year‑old to play for his future at Elland Road, with a January exit not ruled out.
Whites surge to third in Premier League
While Leeds can certainly feel optimistic about their prospects, the Whites have made rapid strides since returning to the Premier League and sit third after four matches of their second season back among the elite. The early form has been bolstered by impressive summer signings, yet not everyone in Daniel Farke’s squad is content.
James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi have all performed brilliantly, providing the defensive stability and creativity that helped Leeds climb the table. Their contributions have masked concerns elsewhere in the squad.
Dominic Calvert‑Lewin is firmly established as the club’s starting striker and is arguably in the best form of his career. Consequently, starting spots and minutes have been hard to come by for Nmecha, who has struggled to cement a regular place.
Nmecha's contract at a crossroads
The powerfully built 27‑year‑old German arrived on a free transfer from Wolfsburg and signed a two‑year deal at Elland Road when he became United’s first signing back in the Premier League. He has already netted 52 career goals, including seven in 37 appearances for Leeds.
Over the summer Leeds rewarded several teammates with new and improved contracts – Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Brenden Aaronson and Jayden Bogle all signed extensions – while Nmecha has watched the clock tick down on his own arrangement.
Asked about his situation, club officials said Nmecha’s future is “being assessed” and “fluid”, adding that they are happy with his role but remain non‑committal on offering a fresh deal.
Mid‑season sale or free departure
With his contract expiring at the end of the season, a mid‑season sale in the January window is not being ruled out, albeit with a massive caveat. By not offering a new deal, Leeds risk losing the seven‑cap German international on a free transfer next summer.
Nmecha is eligible to sign a pre‑contract with an overseas club from 1 January, and his agent is reportedly keeping an eye on potential opportunities. Should he become a free agent, his 52‑goal record and recent performances suggest he would not be short of suitors.
The club would need a replacement if Nmecha departs, as he provides valuable backup for Calvert‑Lewin. Owner 49ers Enterprises would be unlikely to approve his exit without a ready‑made alternative, especially after letting Joel Piroe and Joe Gelhardt leave over the summer.
Leeds are reportedly scouting an upcoming striker to cover Calvert‑Lewin rather than replace him outright, with New York Red Bulls frontman Julian Hall named as a potential target. As of now, no decision has been taken, and Nmecha’s future will be decided in the weeks and months ahead.
