Leeds United break record to secure Britain's priciest keeper
Leeds United have completed a club‑record signing by paying up to £45 million for 23‑year‑old goalkeeper James Trafford, moving him to Elland Road. The fee makes Trafford the most expensive British goalkeeper ever and signals the club’s intent to reinforce its goalkeeping options.
The acquisition directly addresses Leeds United’s ambition to compete at the highest level in the league and to restore historic success, offering a proven shot‑stopper to bolster the club’s defensive stability.
The deal, described as a club‑record move to Elland Road, underlines the financial commitment Leeds United are making, setting a new benchmark for British goalkeepers.
"I don't really care if I have a point to prove," James Trafford said, adding that he will "rise above the pressure of his hefty price tag". He continued, "I'm just going to go out there, try as hard as I can and have as much fun as I can."
He explained, "I know my own abilities, so everything that comes with it is what it is," before expressing his excitement: "I'm just really excited and really happy that this deal is finally done. I can get on with preparing for the new season now."
Trafford made 17 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City last season and contributed to the club’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs, experience that Leeds United view as valuable for their defensive stability.
He praised the league, stating, "The league is a better place for Leeds United being in it because of the way they want to play, who they are as a club and the history they have." Trafford believes the team’s energy, physicality and quality will help take the club back to its historic heights.
Supporters will see Trafford’s first appearance when Leeds United host RB Leipzig in a pre‑season friendly at Elland Road on Saturday, 8 August (14:00 BST), giving the goalkeeper an early platform to showcase his abilities and allowing the club to gauge his integration into the squad.
