Leeds' goalkeeper crisis pushes them to chase James Trafford

Leeds United have been left with only Lucas Perri and veteran Alex Cairns after Karl Darlow moved to Manchester United and Illan Meslier joined Arsenal, prompting the club to target England goalkeeper James Trafford, who has given his consent for a summer move to Elland Road as Manchester City open formal talks.

Manchester City acquired Trafford from Burnley for £27 million last summer, but the club have now signalled willingness to entertain offers. Leeds United are in active negotiations, and the England international has confirmed his preference for a move to Elland Road this summer.

Leeds United’s urgency stems from the loss of first‑choice keepers Karl Darlow to Manchester United and Illan Meslier to Arsenal, leaving only Lucas Perri and veteran Alex Cairns as senior options. The 49ers Enterprises ownership therefore view Trafford as a long‑term solution.

The club’s financial muscle, with a net spend below £20 million so far this summer, enables Leeds to meet the valuation placed on Trafford, reported between £35 million and £40 million and potentially as high as £50 million depending on the deal structure.

At Manchester City, Gianluigi Donnarumma is firmly established as the undisputed number one under manager Enzo Maresca, limiting Trafford’s first‑team chances and leaving veteran Marcus Bettinelli as the obvious backup.

Trafford’s lack of regular minutes at the Etihad Stadium contrasts with his role in England’s FIFA World Cup campaign in North America, where the Three Lions finished third, and he has returned from his post‑tournament break to decide his club future.

His near‑certain departure would free City to reassess senior goalkeeping options, a task for director of football Hugo Viana as part of the squad rebuild, while Leeds would secure a goalkeeper capable of challenging for the starting spot.

Negotiations must conclude swiftly to allow Trafford to join Leeds’s pre‑season preparations in the United States before they finish, making the transfer one of the summer’s most closely watched goalkeeper stories.
