Lecce gamble on Otele as Basel seek to cash in €3 million fee
Super Eagles winger Philip Otele is set to join Serie A side Lecce from Swiss Super League champions FC Basel for a reported fee of around €3 million. The 26‑year‑old remains under contract with Basel until June 2028, but talks this week indicate the transfer is imminent.
Otele spent last season on loan at Bundesliga club Hamburger SV, where he scored once in nine league appearances. Hamburger SV opted against activating the purchase clause, valued between €4.5 million and €5 million.
He has earned five caps for the Nigeria national team, adding international experience to his résumé. The Super Eagles winger’s age of 26 underscores his readiness for a new challenge.
FC Basel paid Al Wahda €3 million to sign Otele in 2025 and now seek a similar fee to recoup their investment while freeing up squad space. The Swiss club also benefits from the player’s contract running until June 2028.
Lecce’s interest is driven by Otele’s blend of Serie A potential and international pedigree, prompting direct talks with Basel this week to finalise the deal. The club aims to bolster its attacking options ahead of the new season.
The move would give Otele the opportunity to compete in Italy’s top flight, a step up from his recent Bundesliga stint, and promises regular playing time on a larger stage. The Done Deal also signals his departure from the Swiss chapter of his career.
For Basel, the €3 million fee represents a modest return on their investment; for Lecce, it adds depth to the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. Hamburg, having missed the purchase window, will look elsewhere for reinforcement.
