Leah Williamson's handball forces Arsenal penalty in Champions League
Arsenal and Paris FC faced each other on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Women's Champions League when, with three minutes left to play, Leah Williamson picked up the ball with two hands in her own penalty area, resulting in a penalty being awarded and the match eventually ending in a draw.
For Arsenal, who were missing Orange Lioness Daphne van Domselaar, there seemed to be no problem for a long time; after fifty minutes the score was 0-2 in favour of the Gunners.
Penalty and draw
After the handball Arsenal were awarded a penalty; Maeline Mendy took the chance and placed the ball on the spot, making the final score 2-2.
Penalty drama sees Arsenal lose two-goal advantage against Paris FC
Earlier in the match Clara Mateo had scored the first equaliser for Paris FC, after which Arsenal lost control of the game.
It is not the first time a handball leads to a penalty; in the men's Champions League Tyrone Mings handled the ball against Club Brugge, after which the Belgians took the penalty and won 1-0.
Aston Villa has also recently experienced a similar situation, indicating that handballs in European competitions remain a recurring problem.
