Lazio’s bold chase of Mauro Icardi amid Champions League hurdle
In the bustling offices of Lazio, sporting director Angelo Fabiani has opened formal talks with Argentine striker Mauro Icardi, who has been a free agent since 30 June, as the Roman club looks to add a proven goal scorer before the transfer window shuts.
Lazio’s recruitment drive
Fabiani’s outreach was confirmed by journalist Gianluca Di Marzio on Wednesday, marking the first concrete step toward a possible signing. The club’s ambition comes as head coach Gennaro Gattuso seeks to reinforce a squad that has already secured midfielder Davide Frattesi, a deal involving Inter Milan that is practically closed.
While Lazio’s recent activity focuses on filling a centre‑forward role, the club’s lack of Champions League football next season has become a sticking point for Icardi, who has made clear that playing in the competition is his top condition.
The Argentine, now 33, is evaluating the proposal but insists on joining a side that will contest the Champions League, a tournament Lazio will miss in the upcoming campaign.
Icardi’s expectations and market hurdles
Salary expectations present the biggest obstacle: Icardi earned roughly €10 million net per year at Galatasaray, a figure beyond Lazio’s current budget, even though the Turkish club previously offered only half that amount for a renewal.
With just 20 days left before the transfer deadline, the clock is ticking for both parties to find common ground.
Icardi’s Serie A résumé is extensive – he began with Sampdoria, then became a lethal scorer at Inter with 121 league goals, and has expressed a desire to return to the league that shaped his career.
He also indicated that a move would involve relocating his partner, actress China Suárez, to Rome, underscoring the personal dimension of the decision.
Recent rumors linked Icardi with Como, a club set to play in the Champions League, and an offer from Besiktas, but his agent Elio Pino publicly dismissed any return to Argentina, stating the striker wants to continue his career in Europe.
During his three‑year spell at Galatasaray, Icardi tallied 77 goals and 25 assists in 134 matches, becoming the club’s all‑time top foreign scorer and winning four Süper Lig titles, a Turkish Cup and a Super Cup, before departing amid disappointment with the president and coach.
Despite the financial and competitive challenges, Lazio remains interested, keeping the possibility alive as Icardi continues to assess offers that match his Champions League aspirations.
