Laurent's St. Pölten women chase comeback in the Europa Cup

Laurent's St. Pölten women chase comeback in the Europa Cup

In the Swedish stadium of Malmö FF, the women of SKN St. Pölten gather on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to fight in the Women‑Europa‑Cup against a 0‑2 deficit. Coach Laurent Fassotte wants to turn the tide and create a comeback.

Fassotte's Plan for the Comeback

In the first leg at home, Coach Laurent Fassotte's team missed a clear starting position and now has to close the 0‑2 deficit gap. “We hope that we can turn the tide. Why shouldn't we create a comeback,” the Belgian explained.

Fassotte announced that he will approach the game differently. “We believe in our qualities. If we score the first goal, we are back in the game, and confidence will swing to our side,” he said after analysing the first return match.

Against the strong opponents from Malmö, the team has already identified weaknesses. Malmö FF lost over the weekend 1‑3 to the Swedish league mid‑table side Brommapojkarna, a result the St. Pölten women want to use to their advantage.

At the same time, the Sturm‑Frauen‑Team from Graz, after a 1‑6 defeat, is fighting for an honourable farewell against VfL Wolfsburg. Coach Tode Djakovic wants to showcase the Sturm women internationally once more.

During the Europa‑Cup‑Achtelfinal‑Auslosung on Friday at 1 p.m., it is highly likely that domestic women’s football will no longer be represented. Last year, Wiener Austria reached the quarter‑finals of the Champions League.

The situation highlights the challenges of Austrian women‑Fußball, which, despite strong performances in international competition, seeks greater consistency.
